Index shows clear decline in China

In April 2022, the container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) declined to 122.8 points from 123.3 points (seasonally adjusted) the month before, according to the latest flash estimate. This downturn can be attributed to the Chinese ports, where the index dropped from 132.5 to 130.2 points.

The index for Europe’s North Range rose from 113.1 (revised) to 114.2 points. The RWI/ISL index for May 2022 will be published on 30 June 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, commented: “In many ports, the supply bottlenecks eased further in April. On the other hand, the consequences of the lockdown are already being felt in the Chinese ports, which is again having a negative impact on international trade. The consequences will also be felt in Europe in a few weeks.” (sh)
