Increasing storage capacities in Penthalaz

The Swiss transport company Planzer opened its Rail Centre in Penthalaz, Vaud, on the industrial site of Venoge Park, five years ago. Since then, the CT hub has seen its freight throughput rise by 25%. Today, an average of 25 SBB wagons are unloaded, reloaded, and loaded per night and 640 t of goods are transferred between rail and road every day.

Parcel transport has also increased strongly since the beginning: While 20 employees with 14 delivery vans were sufficient to run the CEP service when it was first commissioned in 2018, the workforce has now grown to 38 employees. They handle around 2,000 parcels a day with almost twice as many vehicles as at the beginning.

In order to keep up with the growth of the business, Planzer expanded the parcel sorting and handling facility with a 2,500 sqm extension in October 2022.

Now storage capacity urgently needs to be increased - i.e. doubled. Planzer is therefore planning to build a new automated warehouse at a cost of CHF 35 million. The project still has to be approved by the local voters. The Penthalaz rail centre is the largest rail/road freight handling facility in Western Switzerland. (ben)
