Improving ro-ro services between Italy and Greece

It is exactly a week ago that Grimaldi Group put its “green giants”, the hybrid vessels "Eco Catania" (pictured) and "Eco Malta", into operation on its regular ro-ro line between Patras (Greece), Barie and Venice (Italy).

The Neapolitan shipping group aims to enhance maritime intermodality between the two shores of the Adriatic by deploying ships which are among the largest and most eco-friendly in the world, doubling the capacity (500 trailers and 180 cars) and increasing the performance of the "Eurocargo" class vessels that will be replaced on this route.

At the same speed, the "GG5G"-class ships consume the same amount of fuel as the previous generation ro-ro ships, meaning they can effectively halve CO2 emissions per unit transported. (lh)
