Import hikes and record cargo levels
The port of Los Angeles experienced a record-breaking July 2024, handling 939,600 teu, marking a 37% increase compared to July 2023 and making it the busiest month in over two years. This surge was driven by an early wave of holiday imports, including toys, electronics, and clothing, which arrived alongside typical seasonal goods like back-to-school and autumn fashion items.
With 501,281 teu in loaded imports (a 38% increase) and 114,889 teu in loaded exports (up 4%), the port has achieved 14 consecutive months of export growth. Overall, the port of Los Angeles moved 5,671,091 teu in the first seven months of 2024, an 18% uptick from 2023. (pb)
