IMO launches study on future fuels

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a project to provide technical analysis concerning the feasibility of pathways for the decarbonisation of shipping. The study is called "Future Technology and Fuels for Low or Zero Carbon Shipping”.

This project will assess the availability and technological maturity of alternative fuels. Its findings are intended to serve as a basis for the review of the IMO's strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships.

Funded by South Korea, the project is scheduled to run until 2025. In a first phase, the study will evaluate both the demand and the development of capacity for technologies and fuels with low or zero carbon emissions. It will also analyse its commercial viability and its level of technological maturity, based on three possible scenarios for reducing CO2 emissions by 2050. (sh)
