IAPH explores energy needs for ports
The International Association of Ports & Harbors (IAPH) has commissioned a study to investigate energy-related port investments in developing countries, focusing on the infrastructure required to align with the updated 2023 IMO strategy on reducing GHG emissions from ships.
The study will cover selected countries in Africa, South America, the Indian Subcontinent, Asia and the Pacific Islands. Results will be presented to the IMO’s intersessional working group on greenhouse gas emissions ahead of the 82nd marine environment protection committee session.
Additionally, the IAPH plans further work with the IMO facilitation committee on port digitalisation and the maritime safety committee on combating illicit trade. IMO secretary general Arsenio Dominguez will speak at the IAPH's 2024 world ports conference in Hamburg, focusing on secure and sustainable port solutions for decarbonisation. These initiatives aim to fulfil the collaboration goals outlined in the mou signed with the IMO last July. (pb)
