‘HyBarge’ project for new propulsion technology

Earlier in May HGK Shipping, Europe’s largest inland shipping line, signed a memorandum of understanding (mou) with the companies Hydrogenious LOHC Maritime and Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies to promote the ‘HyBarge’ project from 2024 onwards. LOHC stands for liquid-organic hydrogen carriers. The partners will develop a scalable solution to make hydrogen available as a fuel for inland navigation.

LOHC Maritime general manager Øystein Skär is convinced that “the ‘HyBarge’ project will realise LOHC propulsion technology that takes the high safety requirements of inland navigation into account.”

HKG Shipping CEO Steffen Bauer, in turn, believes that "Hydrogenious’s LOHC technology has enormous potential, especially compared to other hydrogen derivatives.”

The partners aim to develop and commission a demonstrator vessel by 2028, whose propulsion units can be powered by a fuel cell energised by hydrogen dissolved from LOHC. (lh)
