Hupac invests in Viennese terminal

WienCont and the Swiss intermodal operator Hupac have been cooperating for years. Now Hupac has acquired a 4.16% stake in the WienCont container terminal to expand its transport services and strengthen the land bridge from southeast Europe as far as Turkey.

By the end of 2021, around 50 trains per week will travel to and from Budapest, Duisburg, Rotterdam, Halkali, Ludwigshafen, Geleen, Ploieşti and Busto Arsizio.

Hupac operates an intermodal network in Europe and WienCont, a subsidiary of the port of Vienna, runs Austria's busiest trimodal container terminal. Wintcont's other shareholders are Hafen Wien (91.68%) and CN Logistics and Service Group (4.16%).

In H1/2021, traffic volumes on the Hupac Group network increased by 14.5% year-on-year to 568,622 road consignments. The result not only closes the corona gap, but also exceeds the volume handled in 2019 by almost 10%, the company said.

The positive trend is confirmed in all market segments and was consistently above expectations. The exception is maritime traffic, which is suffering from the consequences of the Suez Canal blockage and is clearly suffering from the congestion at numerous terminals due to unpaired hinterland traffic flows.
