HD Ksoe presents design of SMR-powered vessel
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD Ksoe) has introduced a nuclear-powered containership model, using small modular reactor technology.
The company reports that it has it received approval in principle from the US bureau of shipping for its 15,000 teu SMR-powered design, unveiling the model at the ‘New Nuclear for Maritime’ summit in Houston TX (USA).
The vessel eliminates the need for fuel tanks and exhaust systems, optimising space for additional cargo. It will incorporate a marine radiation shielding system and a “supercritical carbon dioxide-based propulsion system.”
HD Ksoe aims to establish a demonstration facility in Yongin to validate safety measures and plans to develop a marine nuclear business model by 2030. (js)
