Global container throughput keeps rising

In the course of the month of October, the container throughput index released by the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) kept going up moderately by 0.6 points to 139.9 this year. At the same time, the figures for the two previous months were revised downwards a little.

The improvement in October marks a shift of trends, since the rise, albeit small, has continued for several months now. There is still a margin of uncertainty of the flash estimate that this month is based on the data provided by 43% of ports that process roughly three quarters of the cargo handling volumes described in the index.

Roland Döhrn, head of RWI’s macroeconomics and public finance department: “World trade seems to be gaining more momentum.” The RWI/ISL container throughput index will publish its flash estimate for November 2019 on 20 December 2019. (fd)
