Global challenges for binational airport

In 2020, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse (EAP) welcomed 71% less passengers than during the record year 2019. Cargo activities, on the other hand, recorded a 2.3% increase to 108,500 t (47,700 t flown, +4.7%).

The important cargo hub serves most of Switzerland, eastern France, and southwest Germany. Express freight was stable (16,745 t) and played a major role in transporting medical equipment.

All-cargo tonnage (+23.9%), accounted for the lion’s share of the increase and was mainly contributed by Turkish Cargo and Qatar Airways Cargo, also serving unscheduled destinations in Asia, North and South America.

EAP's infrastructure, notably the temperature controlled terminal facilities built specifically for the pharmaceutical industry, played an essential role in the increase in cargo activities during the crisis. For 2021, EAP expects cargo volumes to be stable. (ah)
