Giant box terminal growing even bigger

The German port operator, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA), has expanded its largest container terminal in the port of Hamburg.

The rail terminal at the Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB), already one of Europe’s largest box terminals in Europe before this latest expansion, has been augmented with two extra tracks and two new rail gantry cranes.

The rail terminal now has ten tracks, all of which are capable of processing trains up to 740 m long. The expansion raises the station’s box capacity by around 200,000 teu to approximately 850,000 teu per year.

In 2017, the railway transported 42.8% of the total container volume at the port of Hamburg. The expansion has turned the Hamburg rail terminal into the largest in Europe. (ben)
