Germany's roadmap for port development

Germany's federal government has approved its national port strategy, a comprehensive plan to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the country's ports. The aim is to address challenges such as climate and energy transformation, geopolitical tensions, the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit, and changes in global trade. The roadmap includes nearly 140 operational measures to achieve strategic goals, with a focus on digitalisation, skilled labour, and funding.

Over the past decade, the federal government, which is responsible for constructing and maintaining access routes to ports, has invested around EUR 500 million in infrastructure projects per year.

The strategy outlines five areas of action: enhancing competitiveness, developing ports as sustainable energy hubs and traffic hubs, driving digital transformation, focusing on training and employment, and expanding and maintaining transport and communication infrastructure. The implementation process will begin immediately in collaboration with all stakeholders involved. (pb)
