GBRf adopts HVO for biomass transport

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has signed a twelve-month agreement with renewable energy firm Drax to power its freight services exclusively with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) in 2025.

The fuel will be used for rail services transporting biomass from Peel Ports, Liverpool (UK) and the port of Tyne (UK) to Drax Power Station in Selby, Yorkshire (UK). GBRf has moved over 15 million t of biomass to Drax since 2016, supporting the generation of renewable energy for up to 4 million homes according to its own information.

The transition to HVO is in line with GBRf’s decarbonisation strategy and the UK’s net-zero goals. “This agreement marks an important step in our commitment to sustainability and innovation in transport,” says Mark Gibbens, head of logistics at Drax.

John Smith, CEO of GBRf, adds that the initiative supports the UK’s ambition to become “a clean energy superpower.” (js)
