First near-zero-emissions RTGs in the Philippines

Eight hybrid rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs) with ‘near-zero-emissions technology’ have arrived in the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), run by International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI).

The RTGs were produced by Japan’s Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and are powered by lithium-ion batteries as well as by a smaller diesel engine. The technology will “cut emissions by 60-70%, compared to traditional RTGs,” a press release stated.

Compared to regular RTGs the ones made by Mitsui use a smaller diesel engine, mainly to charge the lithium-ion batteries. According to ICTSI, MICT now operates 18 quay cranes and 52 RTGs, which it says is the largest container-handling fleet in the Philippines. (js)
