First maritime LNG terminal in Chennai in service

Alternative fuels are finding favour in India: GAC recently handled the first tanker that berthed at the newly constructed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Kamarajar Port, Ennore, in Chennai (India).

The Marshall Islands-flagged LNG carrier "Golar Snow" was carrying the first consignment of almost 80,000 cbm of LNG from Ras Laffan (Qatar) for commissioning the terminal.

Agency operations were overseen by Captain Srinivasan Sethumadhavan, general shipping services manager at GAC’s Chennai office. He said: "The opening of the first LNG terminal on the east coast of India is likely to change trade dynamics and drive industrial growth in this area. Today, India imports some 45% of its total natural gas. The government has invested heavily in the construction of more LNG terminals and pipelines in a bid to transform the country into a gas-based economy."

It is expected that the number of tanker calls will rise. (kd)
