First cargo carrier with more environment-friendly plastic film

Lufthansa Cargo uses around 500 t of plastic film a year to protect its freight during transport. As part of its sustainability strategy the company works at its roughly 300 stations to reduce the need for plastic and to handle its goods in a way that goes easiest on the environment.

Now Lufthansa Cargo has become the first cargo airline to use a new type of film that consists of 10% recycled plastic and is also 1 micrometre (1 µ) thinner than previous films. This means that about 2 kg less film is needed on each cargo flight.

Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, pointed out that “plastic waste has become a major problem for the environment, so we’re particularly keen to reduce our deployment of plastic and to use it in a way that conserves resources.” (cj)
