First assignment for new "zero CO2" loco


In Spain, Renfe's railfreight division, Renfe Mercancias has put the first of twelve locomotives ordered from Stadler Rail into service in Asturias. The Euro 6000 tractors are 100% electrically powered. The electricity comes from renewable sources. Because they emit no emissions, Renfe calls them "Cero CO2" - zero CO2 - locomotives.

 

Renfe will use the new units for transports for Arcelor Mittal. The first train with the new locomotive and 20 wagons recently left Arcelor Mittal's steelworks in Trasona (Avilés) with a load of hot-rolled coils weighing 1,440 t. Besides climate-neutral traction, the new locomotives run quietly and do not cause vibrations. (ben)
