Ex-chancellor Kern leaves Russian state railways

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, former ÖBB manager and Austria’s ex-chancellor Christian Kern sees no other way out: he is withdrawing from the board of directors of the Russian state railways.

"This morning I informed the bodies of the joint stock company Russian Railways RZD that I am resigning from the board of directors with immediate effect," Kern told the Austrian daily newspaper “Standard”. "As of tonight, RZD has indeed become part of war logistics. I deeply regret this. My thoughts are with the victims of this senseless aggression."

Kern joined the board of directors of the Russian state railways after his time as head of the Austrian social democratic party (SPÖ), not a political engagement but a job for an industry expert. (cj)
