Europe’s first electric tugs
The port of Antwerp-Bruges has reached a milestone in its sustainability efforts with the arrival of six energy-efficient tugboats, including the “Volta 1”, Europe’s first fully electric RSD tugboat.
Equipped with a 70 t bollard pull and rapid charging capabilities, the “Volta 1” operates emission-free and highlights the port’s commitment to climate neutrality by 2050. Built by Damen Shipyards in Vietnam, the tugboats travelled 10,000 km to Antwerp and are now being prepared for full deployment.
These vessels are part of a broader greening initiative that includes innovative hydrogen- and methanol-powered tugboats, reducing the fleet's environmental impact. This investment underscores its leadership in sustainable maritime innovation, the port said in a press release. (pb)
