European group investing in Australia

Dublin-headquartered ASL Aviation Holdings has acquired Pionair, an independent Australian provider of charter and ACMI services. Over time, the Sydney-based carrier will be re-branded as "ASL Airlines Australia" in common with ASL Group members in Ireland, Belgium, France, and UK.

ASL's investment will be of "significant benefit to the economy" in Pionair's main bases. It aims to transform the airline into a stronger and larger service provider in the domestic market, particularly in the express parcel and e-retail sectors.

The Pionair fleet of twelve Embraer E190-E2’s and Bae 146/Avro regional jets will join the group’s current fleet of 140 aircraft. ASL expects to allocate a first 737-800BCF to ASL Airlines Australia as part of its five-year fleet renewal programme. (ah)
