Euromed highlights tasks for shipping industry

At the 24th edition of the Euromed-Convention in Valencia last week, Guido Grimaldi, president of the European association ALIS, put forward that the pandemic not only underlined the importance of the logistics industry, but accelerated the transformation of the transport and logistics business.

ALIS, the logistic association of sustainable intermodality, currently represents approx. 1,600 European companies with a workforce of almost 200,000 people and a yearly turnover of EUR 32 billion. In order to give the logistics industry's achievements a face, the ALIS TV channel was founded in July 2020 and presents the projects of the industry to cut emissions, differentiate transport lanes and find intermodal solutions.

The upcoming taxation rules that are to be based on the amount of emissions generated was Grimaldi's particular concern: "It is not only that some lines and liners might disappear - we risk a back modal shift."

Instead of getting cargo back on the road, politics should push maritime transport via short sea shipping. Incentives like Marebonus or Ferrobonus can only be a beginning, Grimaldi explained. (cd)
