Ettamogah rail hub handles 1,800 m trains
A rail siding in the Ettamogah rail hub near Albury in NSW (Australia) has been upgraded for around AUD 12.2 million (EUR 7.7 million), providing significantly increased efficiency for freight and passenger rail services. The new siding extension will work with Inland Rail to improve regional freight connectivity and reduce the cost for freight operators, the government said.
The siding allows rail operators to move up to 1,800 m freight trains off the ‘Main South Rail Line’ whilst they’re being loaded, allowing other rail traffic to pass. Previously, the trains had to stop on the mainline to exchange wagons at the hub. The regional freight task is expected to increase by 12% to 286 million t a year by 2036.(ben)
