Erfa calls for focused subsidies
The European Rail Freight Association (Erfa) recognises that financial support for single wagon traffic (SWT) can play an important role in achieving modal shift targets. However, such aid must not distort competition with other railfreight services, the association said.
Support for SWT should instead be directed to where it is most needed and of most use to the sector, namely the costly part of last mile and not on long-haul trains between marshalling yards.
This means aid should be focused on a subsidy per manoeuvre (last mile service), especially for less used sidings. This would provide support not only for the incumbents but rather for all actors involved in railfreight, ERFA added. (ben)
