Endless summer?

Early in Q1/2021, the Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd expects a significant higher profit than in the same quarter last year. In a media release, the carrier spoke of a "very good start" in 2021 due to a high demand for container transports and further rising freight rates.

Based on preliminary business figures for the month of January and the current business situation, Hapag-Lloyd estimates its ebitda to amount to "at least" USD 1.8 billion (EUR 1.5 billion) compared to USD 517 million (EUR 469 million) in Q1/2020.

Ebit is expected to score close to that level, with USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.25 billion) compared to USD 176 million (EUR 160 million) in Q1/2020.

With regard to the forecast for 2021, Hapag-Lloyd hitherto remains on the defensive side, speaking of "clearly surpassing the prior-year level." (cd)
