DP moves 100,000th container by rail

DP World has reached a milestone in its 'Modal Shift Programme', moving 100,000 containers by rail from its Southampton hub since the trial began. As the company states railfreight’s share of onward container transport has increased from 21% to over 30%, reducing road congestion and cutting over 25,000 t of CO₂e emissions.

The 100,000th container, carrying goods for retailer Halfords, was transported by rail. The milestone "is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team to make the 'Modal Shift Programme' trial the success it now is,” said John Trenchard, vice-president for commercial and supply chain activities at DP World UK.

Since the start of the trial DP World has launched daily rail services to Birmingham, Cardiff, East Midlands Gateway and Doncaster. The company now aims to increase railfreight’s share to 40% by 2026. (js)
