Doha airport back on growth trajectory
Doha's Hamad international airport (HIA) reportedly handled 505,581 t of cargo in Q1/2019, 1.7% less than in Q1/2018. HIA said that January and February volumes decreased by 4.7% and 4.1% y-o-y, but March figures recovered and grew by 3.1%.
In Q1/2019, HIA also embarked on its second phase of expansion plans, which will boost cargo capacity to 3 million t per year.
These expansions are a key part of Qatar’s preparations to host the 2022 World Cup. In addition to the immediate benefits of increased space and capacities, the airport will witness the construction of an airport city that will include a free trade zone. They will provide significant future investment opportunities. (ah)
