DNV certifies world's largest car carrier

DNV (Det Norske Veritas) has awarded an approval in principle (AIP) certificate to China Merchants Jinling Shipyard for its new pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) design.

Recognized as the world’s largest PCTC, the vessel will be 234 m long and 40 m wide, capable of holding 11,000 car equivalent units (CEUs) on its 14 decks. This design significantly enhances efficiency and reduces per-vehicle transport costs.

The ship prioritises decarbonisation, adhering to Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) phase 3 and NOx Tier III standards. It will primarily utilise LNG as fuel and includes a 4,200 cbm LNG storage tank. Energy-saving features like a stern flow optimisation device and an air lubrication system are incorporated to minimise resistance and propulsion power requirements.

Additionally, the ship will feature hybrid propulsion systems and solar power integration, further reducing energy consumption. The project, a collaboration with ship designer Deltamarin, demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and efficiency in maritime transport. (pb)
