Danish carrier reducing Med network

Maersk Line recently reviewed its current network and as a result reduced the number of Mediterranean ports that it calls at directly with mother vessels that are deployed on Far East-Europe service.

Maersk Line has decided not to offer Malta a direct call from the Far East, but will handle cargo for the island via a thrice weekly feeder service linking the transhipment port of Port Said (Egypt) to Malta.

According to Joe Gerada, group managing director at Thomas Smith, Malta's domestic trade will not be impacted. Maersk will continue to operate direct services from North Europe, and South America, besides being connected worldwide via other transhipment ports, as it has always been for many years.

Thomas Smith always aims to offer a one-stop-shop for shipping clients, and is consequently looking optimistically at these developments. (kd)
