Containers instead of coal

The first construction phase of the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) in Germany has been completed and was officially opened on Monday with a ceremony and more than 250 guests.

With a capacity of 850,000 teu in the final phase, the intermodal transload facility will be the largest inland container terminal in Europe and located on the former coal island. Shareholders are Duisport, HTS, Hupac and PSA.

The terminal is equipped with six block train tracks under crane und with up to 730 m track length, three portal crane systems and six berths for barges. The DGT is part of the ‘Ener Port II’ project which aims to demonstrate that even a terminal of this size can be operated in a completely climate-neutral manner with local generation of heat and electricity.
