Container flows on the rise

The container throughput index of the German RWI – Leibniz institute for economic research and the institute of shipping economics and logistics (ISL) shows a significant upturn from June to July, rising from (corrected) 110.2 to 116.2 points.

The index is therefore now close to the value of the previous year. Not only Chinese ports witnessed an all-time peak in throughput, the uptick became visible all over the world. The northern range index, which is an indicator for economic development in northern Europe, went up by 6.8 points. That is the strongest rise from month to month so far.

The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on data from 51 ports which handle around 74% of the throughput described in the index. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for August 2020 will be published on 24 September 2020.

RWI economic director Torsten Schmidt said: "Container handling is now approaching the level reached before the period of the corona crisis." (mw)
