Container and rail growth in Hamburg port

Despite a challenging global environment, the port of Hamburg reported growth in key segments in 2024.

Container throughput increased by 0.9% year-on-year to 7.8 million teu, with loaded containers comprising 87% of the total. Conventional breakbulk operations improved by 8.7% to reach 1.3 million t. Notable gains included record US traffic at 685,000 teu and modest increases in trade with China, India and Sri Lanka.

Additionally, rail transport in hinterland traffic surged, with rail now handling over 50% of container transport. New liner services from the Americas and India, launched in early 2025, further underline Hamburg’s prominence in global logistics.

“Our annual results show just how resilient the port is in a tough market environment,” said Axel Mattern, a member of the port’s management board for marketing. (js)
