Commitment of small carriers is crucial!
The vast majority of freight forwarders in Europe recognise the importance of decorbonisation in the road haulage sector. However, unlike large companies, most carriers with fleets of fewer than 20 vehicles see virtually no commercial advantages in it.
According to a recent new study, costs and uncertainty about customer demand, measures to reduce emissions and new energy technologies are the main barriers. Moreover, many carriers do not have the basic abilities to calculate their CO2 emissions and implement measures to save fuel.
The commitment of smaller carriers is however crucial if the sector is to reach its decarbonisation goals. More than half a million companies offer road haulage services in Europe, and 99 % of them have fewer than 50 employees. (ben)
