Collaboration for transit traffic via Swiss Alps

The German railfreight operator DB Cargo and its Swiss counterpart, SBB Cargo, are to collaborate more closely. The partners’ alpine transit agreement has been prolonged for three more years, ahead of its expiry date.

The two companies have been working together in the field of railfreight transit traffic via the Swiss Alps for five years. During those years, trains began running every three hours between Mannheim (Germany), and Chiasso near the Italian border.

The cooperation is advantageous for SBB Cargo as it can operate more efficiently due to the higher transport volumes. That in turn promotes the modal shift from road to rail.

On behalf of DB Cargo, the Swiss company runs around 130 freight trains per week from Mannheim or Basel across the Alps to the Italian border near Chiasso (Switzerland). (ben)
