Coal transports reach a record high

Indian Railways (IR) has intensified its coal transports. During the year 2021-22, the state-owned railway augmented its coal shipments by a record 111 million t, thus loading a total of 653 million t of coal, 20.4 % more than the year before.

Furthermore, during the period from September 2021 to March 2022, coal transports to the power sector was augmented by 32% in just two quarters.

This month, April 2022, IR has taken many steps to prioritise these coal transports, which increased coal supplies by more than 10 % within one week. Measures included the prioritisation of the movement of coal trains as well as the monitoring of each train from loading to movement and finally unloading. (ben)
