Coal shipments doubled

Following the halt of gas deliveries from Russia, Germany reactivated several coal-fired power plants in reserve in autumn 2022. Since then, German railfreight has already delivered more than 3 million t of hard coal to around 15 German coal-fired power plants.

To transport this quantity by rail, DB Cargo modernised and reactivated more than 1,000 coal wagons, which ship an average of 30,000 t of coal per day from the North Sea seaports to the power stations. That is twice as much as usual.

According to DB Cargo, the coal is mostly transferred to rail in the Dutch ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and then transported mainly towards the federal state of Saarland and southern Germany. (ben)
