Clarkson paints sceptical picture of shipping in 2019

Research undertaken by London-headquartered Clarkson revealed that the growth rate of the demand for world maritime transport rose by 2.7% to 11.9 billion t in 2018, compared to 4.2% in 2017. The ton per mile (tpm) growth, though, remains at an acceptable 3.1%.

However, the consultancy warns that in 2019, the sector needs to pay close attention to the development of conflicting issues such as the trade war between China and the USA.

The capacity of the world merchant fleet grew by 2.6% in 2018, compared to 3.4% in 2017. The forecast for 2019 predicts a similar growth to that of 2018, so the total capacity could reach about 2 billion t in 2020. Orders for new constructions in 2018 fell by 14% in tpm terms. (kd)
