China launches another Southeast Asian service

A new train links China’s northwestern province of Shaanxi with Vietnam. The first train left Xi’an on Tuesday, 23 August 2022, marking the first China–Vietnam freight train route connecting Shaanxi and Vietnam, according to the Chinese government’s homepage.

The train is loaded with 41 carriages of asbestos which were transported from Kazakhstan to Xi'an via the China–Europe freight train service. The cargo will reach Vietnam’s capital Hanoi after an eight-day, 2,384 km journey via Guangxi's Pingxiang port.

The new rail service significantly shortens the transit time compared to the traditional rail-sea route, which takes about 20 days. (ben)
