Ceneri base tunnel ready for trial runs

The 15.4 km long Ceneri base tunnel it the last big building project of the Trans-Alpine rail link (Neat) in Switzerland. Before it is put into operation, the completely equipped tunnel will undergo comprehensive testing.

The federal ministry for transport has now given the green light for test operations. The builder of the tunnel, AlpTransit Gotthard, will launch testing in March and conduct trial runs until the end of August.

After taking over the tunnel in September 2020, operator SBB will carry out its own trial runs with commercial freight and passenger trains. The tunnel, which connects Camorino near Bellinzona with Vezia near Lugano, is expected to begin a regular service as from mid-December. (ben)
