Cargo driving Norwegian long-haul pax expansion

Avinor, a wholly-owned state company under the Norwegian ministry of transport and communications, which is in charge of 44 state-owned airports, has reported fuller flights and more cargo of late.

Gaute Skallerud Riise, Avinor’s vice-president for traffic development, reported that “in 2024, cargo on incoming long-haul passenger flights grew by 71%. This trend continued into January 2025, with Oslo airport recording a 5% increase in cargo volumes compared to January 2024.”

A key driver has been the growth in inbound cargo on international passenger flights, which has enhanced airline profitability at Oslo airport and optimised market capacity utilisation.

Skallerud Riise concluded that “these developments strengthen both the economic viability of airlines and the efficiency of the air cargo sector.” (ah)
