Biofuel trials with 20% GHG reduction
Hapag-Lloyd has successfully bunkered its vessel, “Colorado Express”, with a B25 bio marine fuel blend from Exxon Mobil, marking a significant advancement in sustainable marine fuel use.
This 25% biofuel blend combines Exxon Mobil’s Premium HDME 50 ultra-low sulphur fuel oil with fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) derived from waste cooking oil. Complying with ISO 8217:2017 standards and boasting material certification under RED II, this blend achieved a 20.1% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wake basis.
This trial aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s goal to achieve net-zero fleet operations by 2045 and showcases Exxon Mobil’s commitment to expanding biofuel options for the maritime sector. (pb)
