Better rates with environmental standards

Following the implementation of the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) in March, the Brazilian Port of Açu now operates according to the ranking of classified vessels that exceed the emission standards issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Ships which perform above environmental standards, including the levels of greenhouse gases emissions, now have access to different port tariffs, with discounts up to 10%. With this initiative, the Port of Açu joins a list of 62 global ports that have adopted the incentive mechanism.

ESI is a project led by the world ports sustainability programme (WPSP), linked to the International Ports Association (Iaph). The Port of Açu had 3,245 vessel calls in 2020. Now, the first vessel to call the base and receive the incentive was “SEA Brasil”, operating for Equinor. (cd)
