Better rail access for Wilhelmshaven

Around EUR 13.6 billion is to be invested in Germany’s rail infrastructure in 2022. This is roughly EUR 900 million more than in 2021 and the highest sum ever made available in a single year. The money will be used for 175 infrastructure projects.

Among other things, 1,800 km of track, 2,000 switches and 140 bridges are to be renewed. Railfreight traffic will also benefit from the investment programme. The modernised Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven line is scheduled to go into operation at the end of the year. Here, the double-track expansion and electrification will allow more trains to run to Germany's only deep-water port in the future.

Investments are also being made in the expansion and new construction of the Karlsruhe-Basel line: by upgrading the line to four tracks and increasing speeds to 250 km/h, DB is creating space for more freight traffic on this route. (ben)
