Beefing up capacities in Mexico

In the Pacific port of Manzanillo, the terminal Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), the Mexican subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), which is headquartered in Manila (Philippines), recently took delivery of new equipment. It was a pair of quay cranes and five rubber tired gantries as part of the terminal's second phase capacity improvement programme to expand the Mexican port.

Manufactured by the Chinese Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries, the new quay cranes are designed to service the ultra large vessels plying intra-Pacific routes, with reach of up to 24 container rows across. On the landside, the five RTGs are expected to further improve the terminal’s efficiency to meet demand.

Once deployed, the CMSA fleet will be composed of eight quay cranes and 21 RTGs. As one of the fastest-growing marine units in America, CMSA achieved its first year-to-date 4 million teu milestone last July. It is also the only terminal in Manzanillo with land for expansion. (fd)
