Bangladesh commits to eco-friendly recycling
Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA), a voluntary organisation of the shipowner associations of Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea, has welcomed Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable practices in the ship recycling industry and highlighted its dedication to protecting the environment and the well-being of workers.
Liberia and Bangladesh recently submitted their instruments of accession to the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
ASA secretary general, Yuichi Sonoda, said, "the decision reflects Bangladesh's proactive approach to improving the industry's practices, ensuring worker safety, and minimising the environmental impact associated with ship recycling." He added that this positions Bangladesh as a responsible global player in the ship recycling sector. (lh)
