Automate trucks to help cut driver shortages

The Finnish automated driving technology company Sensible 4 and the Japanese commercial vehicle provider UD Trucks have retrofitted UD’s flagship heavy-duty Quon unit, to enable it to operate autonomously and transport, and dump, material at one of UD’s customer’s sites.

Sensible 4’s software can operate in challenging industrial site conditions, as trials have shown. The system also meets the positioning and environmental requirements as expressed by Sensible’s industrial customers, to make self-driving operations commercially viable.

The growing shortage of drivers is affecting the transportation industry across the world – it is forecast that by 2028 there will be a shortage of 280,000 truck drivers in Japan alone. (ben)
