APM Barcelona introduces new technology

APM Terminals Barcelona has installed a new fleet management and automatic weighing system in the 29 straddle carrier cranes it acquired recently. Thus the system is now installed in all straddle carriers in the terminal. According to the terminal manager the system allows the firm to “offer better verified gross mass services (VGM), thus increasing our operational capacity in terms of container weighing”.

The weighing system, developed and patented by the terminal, is certified by ‘Applus’ (with Enac accreditation) and complies with the requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Human Life at Sea. Solas was launched by the International Maritime Organization; it refers to the weight certification of containers.

The new system makes it possible to read the weights of the containers while they are being moved, without needing to halt operations, thus eliminating downtimes for weighing whilst providing an accuracy five times higher than that required by Solas. (cd)
