Another victim on the Baltic Sea

Ferry operator Stena Line is planning to remove the Sassnitz-Trelleborg route from its timetable for good. The main reason does not lie in the current travel restrictions arising from the corona pandemic but in the route‘s enduring overall economic situation, the company says. The temporary suspension of the German-Swedish link that was announced on 14 March has therefore become permanent.

Over the last few years, Stena line has had great difficulty maintaining its strategic focus of offering ferry services for passengers and cargo on this route due to falling freight volumes and the loss of a major part of the rail traffic to other links.

For the time being, the “Sassnitz” ferry will remain anchored in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany and then, depending on how the talks between employers and employees pan out, it may be transferred to Sweden. (mw)
