Alpine transit: rail and road volumes fall


Freight traffic through the Swiss Alps was affected by the difficult economic situation in Europe in H1/2023. Truck journeys fell by 13,000 to 463,000. In railfreight, transport volumes decreased even more.

 

Rail's share was 72.7% - 0.9% lower than in H1/2022. In H1/2023, a total of 19.1 million t of goods were transported by road and rail through the Swiss Alps - about one million t less than in H1/2022.

 

On the roads, transport volumes decreased by 100,000 t (-2.7%). By rail, a total of 13.9 million t were shipped across the Alps; a decline of 6%, as the latest statistics of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport show. (ben)
