A tough quarter for Hamburg

The port community of the Port of Hamburg handled 91.8 million t of seaborne cargo from January to September 2022, about 4.3% t less than in 2021.

Conventional general cargo performed well with 1.1 million t crossing the quay walls of Hamburg, a growth of 19.3% compared to 2021. Bulk volumes dropped by 7.4% to 27.5 million t. Container throughput suffered less, amounting to 6.3 million teu and thus declining by 2.7%.

The port saw itself in a good position in comparison with the rest of Europe. “Global supply chain disruptions were responsible for a fall in cargo handling,” explained Axel Mattern, CEO of HHM - Port of Hamburg Marketing, pointing out that container handling in Rotterdam decreased by 4.4%, while Antwerp-Zeebrugge posted a decrease of 5% in this segment.
